About the-fnk — Ableton MCP

the-fnk (Ableton MCP) is an Ableton Live 12 Extension that adds an "Ask Claude…" action to Session view clip slots. You right-click a cell, type an instruction in plain language, and Claude generates or edits MIDI in Live. Nothing happens unless you right-click and ask.

The extension does two jobs. It runs its own built-in MCP server, which gives Claude a way to act in Live. It also launches the Claude Code CLI headless with your instruction. It is self-contained and does not need an external bridge.

In Live's Session view, right-click an empty MIDI clip slot and choose "Ask Claude…".

MCP tools available to the agent:
- get_song_overview: tempo, tracks, scenes and the current scale.
- get_selection: the right-clicked cell (track/scene, whether it is MIDI, whether it has a clip, totals).
- get_clip_notes: reads an existing clip's notes so a new part can be derived from it.
- create_midi_clips: batch-creates MIDI clips in empty slots as one undo step.
- ask_user: asks the producer a short clarifying question.

Configuration is done through environment variables:
- ABLETON_MCP_PORT (default 9787): the port for the extension's localhost MCP server.
- ABLETON_MCP_CLAUDE_PATH (default: auto-detect ~/.local/bin/claude, then PATH): the path to the claude CLI to launch.

Requirements:
- Ableton Live 12 with the Extensions feature, which is currently a beta capability.
- The Claude Code CLI (claude), installed and logged in. Run claude once and complete /login. Install instructions are at https://docs.claude.com/claude-code.

To install, download the .ablx file from the repository's Releases page and add it to Ableton Live's Extensions.

How to install

  1. Download the extension from the author's link above.
  2. In Ableton Live 12 Suite (beta 12.4.5+), open Settings → Extensions and add the .ablx file.
  3. Right-click a clip slot in your Set and pick the-fnk — Ableton MCP from the menu.

Extensions run real code on your computer. Only install extensions from authors you trust, and save your Set first. More on safety →
